It seems a little too simple that an entire armada would simply bow down to, and follow, an unconverted unbeliever, just because he'd murdered their leader, doesn't it?

Yeah, definitely. And that's because things are generally a lot more complex than that. Say "Hello" to the new Holy Half-Dead. While everybody's chasing after "The Riddick," she's quietly consolidating her power and preparing to strike.
